Jesse Foat

8 Lower Street

Occupation: Greengrocer

Kentish Gazette – Tuesday 23 February 1808

Ramsgate

Jesse had taken over from his father’s Ramsgate grocer and cheesemongers business in 1808, then sometime before his first child’s birth in 1811 he moved into Deal setting up as grocer in Broad Street where he stayed for a few years before first moving to Middle Street then into 8 Lower Street where he and his family lived and worked until his death, aged just forty-three, in 1828. His wife Jane gives birth to their last child, Frederick Jesse, four months later.

Kentish Gazette – Friday 01 May 1812.

Widow Foat

Jane, as Widow Foat, is listed in the ‘Assessment on Properties in Deal’  in 1830  but she is not there in 1835. It appears, therefore, that she and her family moved back to Ramsgate between those dates as she, Frances, Henry and George are there in 1841 when that year’s census was taken.

Probate

Jesse died without leaving a will and it is not until 1867 that finances are fully sorted. Jane and her daughter Frances Susan are both named in the probate record dated March 9th 1867 in which there are £200 worth of effects left.
