Gertrude Harraden was a member of the W.S.P.U. and supported Emmeline Pankhurst at a meeting held in Leamington Spa. In 1910 she became the local secretary for Deal & Walmer W.S.P.U. organising small meetings in her home, a bungalow on Kingsdown Beach, from where she travelled weekly to Ramsgate’s WSPU offices.
In 1911 she held the only known census boycott in Deal & Walmer. Stating on the form that, as well as herself, there were six single female visitors including a hospital nurse, a domestic cook and a housemaid, all of whose names were ‘Unknown.’
