In 1908 Mrs. Eleanor Cockburn-Curtis organised a ‘Votes for Women’ meeting in Walmer The meeting was held at Cheriton Hall, on North Barrack Road with Evelyn Sharpe of the Women’s Social & Political Union as the main speaker.

Whether Eleanor continued to support the W.S.P.U. is not clear but she and her husband continued to support the ‘Votes for Women’ campaign in Deal & Walmer and were, with Mrs Josephine Clare-Royse, integral to the formation of the area’s NUWSS.  Her husband, Colonel Cockburn-Curtis, wrote to the Common Cause, the NUWSS’s weekly journal, in October 1915 and again 1917 in regards to the benefits of female education.
