Pickett’s Row

Pickett’s Row was a row of seven two-roomed (one up, one down) terraced houses situated behind the once Congregational Chapel, today’s Landmark Centre.
In the 1841 Census, it is written Piquet’s Row.
In 1851 the house numbers started at the far end of the row with numbers 4 to 10, but by 1871 they had changed, starting at 5 followed by 6 then 6a and 6b.
They were included in the censuses as part of Union Street (now Union Road), carrying on from 1 to 4 Union Street, which were also later demolished and sat where the Cleary Hall in the Landmark Centre now is.
They were still occupied when the 1939 Register was taken, with the numbers once again 5 to 10.
The row has since been demolished.
