Mrs Winifred Edgar had a keen interest in fishing competitions and became an active member of Deal Sea Angling Association and in around 1911, when this photo appeared in the Daily Mirror, she was the first to organise ladies competitions off Deal Pier.
Her interest in politics led her to stand for election as a councillor for the North Ward of Deal in 1923 but was defeated by 34 votes. In 1924 she not only became a J.P. but won the election in the North Ward becoming Deal’s first lady councillor.
Her support for women to have equal voting rights with men, led her to be on the same platform as Mrs Charlotte Despard, of the Women’s Freedom League when she visited Deal in 1925.
